PAINT GRIP & GALVANIZED PAINTABILITY

There are several terms used for paintable galvanized steel.   Listed below are some:
  • Acid Washed
  • Paint Grip
  • Phosphate Treated
  • Galvannealed
  • Electro Galvanized

The excellent corrosion resistance that results when the alloyed steel coating is painted is useful when the application demands a long service life.

Acid washed and paint grip are one in the same.  Paint grip has become a generic term used by both suppliers, equipment manufacturers, contractors and the design team.

Galvannealed sheet is an ideal material for painting.  Galvannealed sheets can be readily painted.  Typically, the surface should be cleaned so the application of a suitable primer and topcoat can achieve good paint adhesion and corrosion resistance.

Galvannealed Products
Features Benefits
Corrosion Resistant      Long Life, Saves Replacement Cost
Excellent Paintability              Minimal time & material cost to prepare for painting
Easy Weldability                     Less Labor & Scrap
Phosphatized

Any galvanized sheet surface finish can be “phosphatized”.   This product is specially pre-treated at the steel mill for subsequent painting.  The treatment produces a crystalline deposit of hydrated zinc phosphate compounds onto the galvanized surface. The phosphate coating provides a good adherent base for the application of paint.  Minor cleaning may be necessary to remove oils or soil picked up during fabrication, shipping and/or handling.

Painting

Many types of paint can be used on galvanized sheeting.  The paint choice depends upon the results required by the design team.  For example, some design teams will maximize weather resistance, while others will provide a new gloss finish for aesthetics.  Consultation with the paint supplier is recommended to obtain the desired results.
